Prom Night!

At breakfast Jo Jo announced this evening was prom night and we all got excited and began lining up our dates and preparing to decorate the main cabin for a fancy feast and the Studio for some hot dancing. The theme was the 1980's, which was kind of funny since a lot of the counselors here were just babies during the 80's. But they got into it anyway...

That afternoon before the big event the ladies in Tulgeywood hung out in their cabin and caught up on the day's hot gossip:

By five o'clock everyone had gotten their sharpest outfits on. Some of us even took showers. We had cocktails out on the porch:

Cathy D. feeds Jonah a romantic bite of casserole at the big dinner:..

...while Teak and Stephanie sit in awkward silence...

The Studio was transformed into a palace of love:

We elected our Prom King and Queen. Congratulations John C. and Nancy C!

Even Hellcat came down to boogie:

And boogie we did!

Finally it was time for bed. Everyone was exhausted and we'll be sleeping well for sure...

Good night!

magic!

The other night we we treated to a magic show by Jabberwocky's favorite magician Sir Walter Childs. He's come back year after year to amaze us with his feats of illusion and wonder. Here he is trying to convince Skipper to place his head in a guilotine:

Eventually Skipper is persuaded:

And he survives! He gets some balloons for his daring as well...

World of Reptiles!

Last night a someone stuck a large beetle in Jo Jo's desert. Boy was she scared! She jumped right up and screamed like a little girl. Later on she confessed that it made her happy that people were playing such pranks upon her. "That's what the Jabberwocky spirit is all about," she said. "Next time it happens though, I will unleash a can of whoop-ass you will not soon forget!"

Anyway, the beetle trick inspired us all to do a little more research into the world of creepy crawly things and we decided to use this hazy day to take a field trip to the internationally famous "World of Reptiles" in Oak Bluffs. Well, perhaps it is not internationally famous, but there are a few people in other countries who know it exists. Gus, the proprietor, was very friendly to us and let us all visit for free. This was a nice gesture which we really appreciated, especially after someone let one of the lizards out and it disappeared down Manny's pants. Here is a shot of Manny shortly before that incident occurred. That's a large snake next to him:

The room where Gus kept the snakes and lizards had a very peculiar odor. The funny thing was, many of us felt we had sniffed that unusual bouquet before. That's when we realized that this place smelled just like Jub Jub after lunch. Here's Jonah checking out the big tortoise:

Ands here's our group surrounding Gus after the tour. He's trying not to look upset about what happened to that missing lizard:

Here is Julius preparing to pounce on the tortise. He has lured the creature close using a yam as bait. "Tortise makes for good soup in Denmark," he told us. He was unable to subdue this fellow though:

We welcomed some new friends to camp on Monday. Here's Sean W. and John C. enjoying the World of Reptiles. They haven't smelled the snake room yet...

...and here's Stephanie, a new Jabberwockian. This is her first time at a sleep away camp. She can dance like Justin Timberlake! Welcome Stephanie!

And here's Beth! Boy were we excited to see her again! She and Cathy D. started arguing almost as soon as she walked into the cabin. "Cathy, you need to learn how to be quiet!" observed Beth. There are quite a few of us here who could use some lessons in that actually.

And here's Madeline and Bruce. They've been in love for over twenty years now, seriously:

Manic Monday!

Today we completed our final camper rotation which means once again we said good-bye to some friends and hello to some new ones. It's been a busy day full of packing and unpacking and we spent the afternoon and evening at the beach where we had a great sunset cookout followed by drumming. Everyone's finally showered and in bed now but the new pics aren't loaded in yet so please check back soon for a better update. For now here's some shots of a few of the people we miss already:

Here's Dick in a tube. We miss you already! We all love Dick!

Here's David with Skipper. We all love David and sure will miss him!

Here's a picture Faith took of Melissa and Chrike. We'll miss you and your wonderful smile Mel!

And here's another picture Faith took. This one is of Jon, whose smile we'll also miss! We hope to see you all next year!

This is a shot Faith took of Dick and Kelsey in pottery class:

And here's her shot of Nancy, Cathy and Paige in writing class:

2and Sunday

Well, now we know we've truly settled in. We're on the verge of our third camper rotation and we've now made our second trip down to Grace Church for the Sunday service. Skipper carried the cross as usual and we all did our best to keep quiet during the communion. Some of the counselors seemed to be deep in thought during the sermon, so deep in thought in fact that if we didn't know better we might have assumed they were asleep...

Whenever we sing hymns during camp it's hard not to think of our dear friend Ronnie Simonsen. He's a great singer of hymns and a longtime Jabberwockian who is up in Boston this summer battling leukemia. Earlier in the week when we went to the Tabernacle we sang "How Great Thou Art" which is one of Ronnie's signature tunes. Thou art great Ronnie! Many of our returning campers have asked about Ron's health and we're pleased to say he seems to be getting stronger, but he's still got a ways to go. He loves letters so write him at: 2 Inwood Circle, Pelham NH 03076. Here's a picture of our friend Ron singing last year:

After lunch we split up into smaller groups and some went up island to the Field Gallery for an art opening while others stayed at camp to cheer on Italia in the World Cup finals. The red bus took a crew to the beach where Jason swam out to the sand bar for the first time and Matt impressed us all with his underwater prowess. We'd let him drop into the water and then pull him up a few seconds later and he'd nod his head for more. People on shore where watching in amazement and they probably would have called the police if it weren't for the the huge smile on his face each time he emerged from the dunking. The camera wasn't handy during this swim trip so we'll have to post photos of that another time. Here's a picture Faith took of Matt earlier in the day:

And here's some more of Dr. Steve's shots from the summer. We were sorry to say good-bye to both him and Graham yesterday. See you next year guys!

Tomorrow is beach cookout day, and drumming during the sunset. C'mon out to State Beach around 6:30 and dance with us if you're nearby...
