Wild Nights!

When the sun goes down here at Jabberwocky things get crazy! This evening we had studio night and there were many wild performances. Sue Harrington sang her famous rendition of "Respect" and the cabin of Slithy Toves formed a band called "The Alligators" which David G. claims has recorded an album that is out in stores now. Matt L. is dressed as an alligator in the above picture, in case you were wondering. You'll have to ask his counselors what this outfit has to do with alligators since we're not really sure. Below is a picture of George and Christina performing an original ballet.

And here's Nancy C. and Mellisa P. doing a dance they call "fireflies" with Kat and Lidia.

Last night we had a big pizza and dance party to say good-bye to the folks who are leaving at the halfway point. It was boogie central down in the studio. We all got sweaty and ran over each others feet with wheelchairs.

It was sad to say good-bye to the folks who are leaving, but we'll see them again next year, we hope, and we got to say hello to some new ones. Welcome Sue H, Beth A., Mellisa P.,Taylor H. Sam W., Tim F., Skylar B., Sharon J. and Lief S.! We're glad you are here. Well, most of us are glad. Cathy and Beth started arguing the moment Beth arrived.

"But we love eachother," said Cathy.

We're all wondering if any of the new counselors will be able to sleep once Sue H. starts snoring. She sounds like a freight train!

Massage and Flying Horses

Yesterday morning it was grey and rainy so the first period morning class was "group massage". This meant everyone went down to the studio and learned how to massage each other's pain away from our exertions on July 4th. It was a heartwarming scene, counselors massaging campers and vice versa. We kneaded out those knots! Manny was overheard asking for a "happy ending" but this request was denied. Here's some pictures.

Yesterday was also Faith Carter's birthday, a sort of camp wide holiday which has been celebrated for many years by sending the Mimsey Gals out on the town for a fancy dinner.

Those of us who didn't make the cut for that invite list had a little party of our own that evening though. We went to Oak Bluffs and rode the flying horses! They let us ride for free! Everyone there watched as we got two free rides in a row and someone asked, "why do they get to ride twice in a row?"

"Because they are Camp Jabberwocky," said the attendant.

Jason was less perplexed this year by the horses since now he understood beforehand that they were not real. Last year he'd been expecting real horses and was quite disappointed at the wooden replicas.

Here's Matt L. walking into the main cabin for dinner. We like to encourge everyone to get out of their wheelchairs for meals if possible. Matt is usually up for just about anything but even so we were all impressed by this.

Parade!

Well, we dodged a bullet with the rain this year. Reports had heavy storms coming in at 5pm, the exact time the parade was supposed to start. Would all our late-nite efforts be in vain? No, they were not! Hoo-ray!

Before the parade began we were awarded the "Special Prize" which we thought was sort of a poor choice of prizes to give to Camp Jabberwocky, but perhaps we really are special, in the best sense of that word. We certainly weren't boring, that's for sure. You should have seen Hellcat, our 94 year old founder, ramming pedestrians with her motorized scooter. She even got tangled up with one of our wheelchairs. she kept yelling at us all, "Get out of the way!" There was no stopping her.

It was really a lot of fun to march through the streets of Edgartown and hear everyone cheer for us. We could feel the love!

It was an adventurous walk through town, as usual. Besides Hellcat's madcap antics, we had a wheel fall off a wheelchair, soiled pants, a hair pulling incident with one of the spectators, and one grand mal seizure (everything was fine - she got on the float and finished the parade!). So maybe they should have given us "Most Unusual" instead of that weird Special Prize. Anyway, here's the rest of the pics...

Prepartions and a video...

We're all up late here at Jabberwocky preparing for the parade tomorrow. Well, not all of us are up late, but some of us are. This should be a good one for us. We got ambitious and are building two flouts this year, plus lots of very funky wheelchair devices. Jo jo is running around now telling us all to clean this mess up! We just realized we have to get this whole rig to all the way to Edgartown as well...hmmmm...

And now, please click the picture below to view a video compiled from our video classes and other things:

Red Rover, Red Rover!

We woke up today and realized that the July 4th parade is only two days away. Oh my! So we all spent the morning painting various items for the big day. Many of us painted more than just the things we were supposed to paint and we spent a lot of time washing that off as well. Here's some pics of the artists at work:

Elsie Bradford, the camp's youngest member, came back from her trip away and she got a big kiss from Shirley.

Actually, Elsie was the second youngest person at camp since Larissa Ho is a month younger, but sadly she and the other Ho's left today. The two little girls did get to hang out together a bit in the morning though. This is how we carry babies at Jabberwocky:

Like many of us, Elsie is working on her eating skills in the Main Cabin. She spits up just like some of us too. Good thing we have plenty of bibs.

After lunch we had a long rest and then bundled up for an afternoon beach trip. We arrived around 4pm and commenced a rousing game of "Red Rover" during which many feet got run over by wheelchairs and a lot of sand was consumed. Here's some pictures from that heated match:

Then lots of people began to arrive for the increasingly popular Monday night beach drumming and cookout. We ended up feeding half of the island! But that was fine because it was a beautiful night and we ate as much flame broiled meat as we could and generally enjoyed each other's company. Here's new arrival Hillary Reston savoring a potato chip:

More fine pictures:

Believe it or not, Bruce's eye is getting better...

Towards the end of the evening a huge rainbow appeared. It was almost sappy how pretty it looked. We promise you this isn't a photoshopped picture though. It's just proof that old Camp Jabberwocky sits at the end of a rainbow.

A Fine Weekend

Yes, it was a fine weekend here at Camp Jabberwocky. We had some nice visits from old friends and fun times with new ones. Sarah P. came by and Shirley was so happy and surprised she nearly flipped out of her wheelchair. The Ho Family came for the weekend as well, with their latest addition, little Larissa Ho. Here's Shirley holding the little Ho:

Saturday was a beach day and then we all watched "Charlie And the Chocolate Factory" slumber party style down in the studio. That's the theme for the parade this year, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". We figured since we are all experts on sweets, this only made sense. We're starting to make the costumes and floats now. Come cheer us on if you're in town!

On Sunday we went to Grace Church where they gave us a big welcome round of applause since it was our first visit of the summer. We all got dressed up nicely and some of us even washed our hair. We tried our best to stay quiet throughout the service, though as usual that proved difficult.

In the afternoon most of us loaded onto the red bus to go to Oak Bluffs and see the Firemen's Muster, but by the time we got there it was pretty much over. Manny said this was Jon Wolff's fault and most of us agreed. He might be in for a little water dousing tomorrow. Anyway, after dinner we all walked down to Owen Park to see the band concert. This was a very pleasant time indeed and Nancy J. sang along to almost all of the old time tunes. They should have given her a mic!

At some point people got up and began dancing and that was when things really got crazy. Look out!

But then it started to get dark so we all hurried back to camp to brush our teeth and get in bed under warm covers. It's chilly tonight!
