Hi All -

Camp is right around the corner!!

"How can you say that," you might ask. It's January. It's cold. It gets dark at 4:30."

Yes, all of these things are true. BUT - camp dates are out!!

The first session of Camp Jabberwocky Summer 2012 will be ... *drum roll, please, folks*

June 18th to July 16th !!!!
(play on 13th and 14th)

"That's early," you say.

Yes, it's about a week earlier than usual. But that allows the second session counselors time to enjoy the WHOLE session before having to head back to college...

So, MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Tell your friends about the play!! Camp is right around the corner!

Jonah

Hi All

By now you may have heard of Jonah Taub sudden and unexpected passing yesterday. I still do not have any details or answers to the questions that have been swirling about.

Dr. Steve wrote something beautiful about one of his first interactions with Jonah, and - with his permission, of course - i share it with you so that we can all remember once again what a sweet young man he often was.

Don't be concerned by the apparent length of the article. it is so well written, it just flows naturally....

One warm early summer night just after sunset I was feeling sorry for myself.

I had been with Camp all day and I was tired from all the frenetic activity and the intense emotions that I always feel there. Even though those feelings are powerfully positive, they can be draining sometimes.

Just as I was about to go back to the “Doctor’s House” that camp rents just down the street, ready to finally slump on the couch and watch the end of a Red Sox game, one of the counselors asked me to go up to Graham's cabin, Bandersnatch (the cabins are named after characters from the famous Lewis Carol poem about the Jabberwock), and check on a camper named Jonah. He was an impish youngster, about 10 years old at that time, who always had a mischievous look in his eye. He had CP and depended on others for all his daily needs.

Jonah's spasticity was fairly severe and he had a habit of sleeping on his belly, insisting that it was the only way that he could be comfortable in bed. As a result, he had developed friction sores on the front of his lower thighs and kneecaps that were hurting him.

I went up to see him in the twilight of that perfect late June evening. Cicadas were buzzing. There was a gentle breeze in the scrub oaks that shelter the campus. I could faintly hear the mournful tone of a fog horn way out in Vineyard Haven harbor. Lights were on in the cabins around camp and muted chatter, laughter and some singing could be heard from cabins in the distance.

After seeing Jonah's abrasions, I decided to apply antibiotic ointment to the scraped areas and dress them with a non-stick bandage and repeat that procedure for the next few nights. I went back out to gather the supplies from our modest clinic in the "main cabin."

As I walked, I wondered what I was doing. It was a glorious summer evening. I was on one of the most beautiful islands in the world. I imagined that, at that very moment, some of my old school friends were sitting on the deck of a big, beautiful boat in Edgartown Harbor, sipping champagne and looking up at the stars with not a care in the world. I envisioned well heeled vacationers laughing by candlelight over lobster dinners in elegant night spots around the island.

By contrast, I was dirty and exhausted, about to visit a hot cabin on a trivial first aid mission for a disabled kid from Indiana whom I had never even heard talk.

And, like everyone at camp, I was a volunteer. If I was going to take care of people during my precious vacation time, wouldn't it be smarter to do something that involved getting paid?

In that cranky state of mind I opened the creaky screen door to Bandersnatch and sat on the edge of Jonah's bunk. In the semi darkness It didn't take long to apply the ointment and dressings. I said a cursory "Good Night" to Jonah and pushed open the screen door to leave.

But, just as the door was closing, I thought I heard a sound coming from Jonah's bunk.

I went back in.

"Jonah, did you say something?"

Indeed, In a faint, halting voice delivered with great apparent effort, I heard him speak for the first time.

"Ankyoo Dahdhastee."

"What's that Jonah, I didn't quite hear you?"

"Ankyoo Dahdastee."

"Jonah, I'm sorry. I’m not understanding you….Try one more time..."

On his third try I finally got it. In one of my life's most wondrous epiphanies I clearly heard Jonah say:

"Thank you, Doctor Steve."

In that poignant moment, I was suddenly amazed by the grace of the tiny figure lying patiently on his belly in the twilight of that June evening.

" You're welcome, Jonah. We'll do the same thing tomorrow night. Have a good sleep.”

As I pushed open the screen door of Bandersnatch for the final time that evening and emerged into that splendid summer night, I was not jealous of anyone in the world.

I knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be.

Gatherings to be Held in Hellcat's Memory at 5:00pm and 6:30pm

We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and gratitude toward Hellcat for all she made possible through camp.
There will be a gathering in Hellcat's memory on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Jabberwocky's parking place on State Beach starting at 5:00 PM. Please note, this is a change from the 6 pm time announced in the Gazette. This change will allow a small group to go over to Lambert's Cove at 6:30 pm to scatter flowers in her memory.
If you are unable to join us, we will be having a celebratory concert in Hellcat's memory at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs next summer, 2012.

Born in Middleboro, he was the son of Lawrence V. and Annie (Soares) Perry.
Mr. Perry was an avid traveler and a communicant of St. Anthony Church.
Besides his parents of Taunton, with whom he resided, he leaves a brother, Kevin W. Perry and his wife Debra of Taunton; two nieces, Kyle Perry and Kimberly Parmenter and her husband Thad, all of Taunton; one nephew, Keith Perry of Taunton; a great-niece, Heather Ann Parmenter of Taunton; five aunts, Josephine Martin of FL, Lillian Horton of Attleboro, and Virginia Amaral, Helen White and Elsie Santos, all of Taunton; and an uncle, Edward Perry of Taunton.
He was also the brother of the late Patricia A Gentes.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Thursday, Aug. 25th at 8 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 9 a.m.

Sad news

I hate to have this be the first post of the 2011 post summer blog, but...

Larry Perry, one of Hellcat's original Jabberwockians, passed away in his sleep last night due to a heart attack. He was 68 years old.

Larry was at the Nantucket camp. It was "Family Weekend." Larry's parents were there and were able to be with him. He was surrounded by family and friends, and in a place that he loved, at the time of his passing.

No details are known as of now regarding services. I will keep you posted as i learn more.

This afternoon we all headed down to the studio...

For Mandy's baby shower!

Jabberwocky headed over to Edgartown so visit the stone placed at the Edgartown Lighthouse in memory of our friend Graham Hale Gardner. We got a tour of the lighthouse, and used the beach there for most of the morning. It was good to be with friends while remembering one of our fellow Jabberwockians. We miss you every day Graham!

Tonight was studio night! Campers and counselors worked all day preparing skits, dances, songs etc. Everyone did a great job!

Friday Golf Day!

When is lunch!?!

A bunch of us got to go on a special golfing trip at Mink Meadows. It was a lot of fun. Everyone got to hit a ton of balls, and some of us got to use really amazing adapted equipment. The pictures speak for themselves :)

Seth was AMAZING at golf. We asked him if he golfs at home. He said "No. Golf Course."

Makes sense to me!

Skye was another long distance hitter. The instructor gave him some great tips!

This golfing chair was awesome!!

Sharon has been up and out of her chair all summer. She's been trying tons of new stuff too! She's not letting that shoulder injury hold her back either!

Rainy Wednesday

Well it rained on and off all day- but that never stops Jabberwocky from making their way around Martha's Vineyard. The day started off with a camp-wide kickball game. The Battle of the Sexes was a very evenly matched battle- but the girls triumphed in the end (though some believe the men did not get their last ups). A rematch may be in order on that one. Pictures to come on that.

After lunch we all headed down to Oak Bluffs to do some shopping, get ice-cream, and ride the Flying Horses.

David finally made it to camp today!! We were all excited to see him. He won 1000 tickets at the game room!! What an awesome first day!

I've barely seen Bubba using his chair this summer. He's been awesome walking all over the place. We are all so proud of you Bubba!! Keep it up!!

Tonight we celebrated the Summer Solstice with some old and new island friends. We listened to poetry, heard some awesome music, and danced to Rick and his friends' awesome drumming. We packed dinner so we could stay as long as possible!

Mike got the poetic itch and did an impromptu reading for everyone- it was interesting!

Fire dancer at the end of the night. A few counselors and campers stayed to watch- and it was definitely worth the wait!

So as you can see, it was a busy day at Jabberwocky! Never a dull moment- and that's how we like it! Check back tomorrow!

Camp Jabberwocky 2011 Begins!!

Camp Jabberwocky is finally complete! Counselors got on an early boat to meet campers in Woods Hole.

Everyone was excited for Camp to finally begin. Dave couldn't even think straight.

Amulya couldn't stop smiling thinking about being reunited once again!

Welcome home everyone. The island isn't the same without camp!!!

Hey guys! It's almost time for another action packed, monumental, stupendous, magnificent, delightful- and not to mention delicious, adventure at Camp Jabberwocky. Your counselors and directors have been busting their badonk-a-donks for a few days now- cleaning cabins, planting, sweeping, training etc. Right now we're putting the finishing touches on everything, and getting ready for YOU to get here! We can't wait to see you all!!

Kevin was so excited to see you all- he cut off all his hair in anticipation!

Mike has finally been reunited with his long lost love...

Hello folks

It is with a heavy heart that i must write that our dear friend Ronnie Simonsen passed away yesterday afternoon. Here is a post from Kim Ho, his sister.

Ronnie died peacefully at 4:30pm this afternoon. He had a wonderful day. He was laughing with the nurses. He walked to the solarium with Jake and Ellen. When he returned to his room, he sat in the chair and quickly loss consciousness. He never regained consciousness. I will share funeral plans when they’ve been named

The viewing will be held at Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home on 214 Main Street in Salem NH this Saturday from 2 to 6 pm.

The funeral will be at Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church (TCLC) on 171 Zion Hill Road in Salem NH at 2 pm on Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Ronald Simonsen Memorial Fund c/o TCLC at 171 Zion Hill Road, Salem NH 03079.

Ronnie will be sorely missed. He was a wonderful, positive man with a zest for life. I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with him this past Saturday. Even then he spoke of acting, and of the skits he did, and of the wonderful people he knew.

He asked for those of you he knew from Jabberwocky (almost all of you by name, actually, as well as a few that are from years past. What a wonderful memory he had!), and said at least one positive thing about each of you.

Know that Ronnie held all of us in his Jabberwocky family - past and present - in very high regard. As I'm sure we all will remember him in the exact same way.

As of 2 am today, Daylight Savings Time has ended. If you have not already done so... please turn your clocks BACK an hour. An hour more sleep!

The local newscaster where i am mistakenly told everyone to turn their clocks forward an hour. So now there are people all over the place who are 2 HOURS EARLY for everything.

Remember, it's:

Spring AHEAD

when it comes to Daylight Savings...

{i changed all the clocks i could reach in my house, but there are two that i can't change by myself. So depending on what room i'm in in my house - the time is drastically different. It's like living in the Twilight Zone. Who's with me? Show of hands, please?}

BABY BELLA IS HERE!!!

CONGRATULATIONS SULLY AND JAY!!!

Bella Katherine St. Amour was born yesterday 11/6/10. She weighed in at 6 pounds and 14 ounces, and is 18 and a half inches long...

10 fingers and 10 toes.

Mom, dad, and Bella are all healthy and doing fine.

Hopefully there will be more info to follow soon...

Congrats again, to the St. Amours. Here's to a brand-new generation of Jabberwocky counselors... lol... and i'm sure you'll have a bevy of baby-sitters to choose from until that time comes.

Kendra's Surgery

More Kendra news...

About a week and a half ago, Kendra had some surgery. I don't have details as to what it was about. I do know that it was successful, she was super-brave, and after just a few days in the hospital, she is now home.

She would *love* to have cards sent to her! Can you just imagine Kendra and an over-flowing mailbox? Priceless...

I've heard that there was a folly of sorts in Amherst on Halloween weekend. I don't have ANY of the details, so if someone could fill me in, I would really appreciate it. Makes it a lot easier to post about an event if there's something to write about... hahaha.

Seriously though, any info would be good... I know there are a lot of Jabberwockians connected in the Amherst-y area nowadays. I'd rather have repeat info than nothing at all...

Movin' On Up...

Stefanie Sacks has officially moved into her own condo in Peabody. She is adjusting slowly but surely. I'm sure her dog, Coco, is also doing some adjusting to his new environment.

Mike's Play goes public...

The other exciting adventure I had this month was when a bunch of July

counselors took a road trip to Williamstown, MA. Our very own, Mike

Leon wrote a play called, Ghost in the Machine which was begin

performed at Williams College. The play was amazing and it was great

to see it, visit Williams, and hang out with the cast! We were all

very impressed with Mike's play-writing talents.

So Mike, CONGRATULATIONS on your play! it's amazing that you wrote one, first of all... not very many people can do that ...

and then that it actually was PERFORMED? Kudos to you, my friend! I hope you know that those us who weren't there with you to watch the performance still support your talents, abilities, and courage.

Kendra's Columbus Day Weekend

a note from our own Maggie Raemer about a fun-filled long weekend with Kendra. Sounds like everyone had a blast!

Over Columbus Day weekend i had the pleasure of being with

Kendra all weekend while her mom was in California and her dad was

working. We had a BLAST! I stayed at her house the first night, of

course we took a trip to the Cape Cod Mall, visited Sal, Ron and

Jackie at Hannoush Jewelers {on a personal note, i wish i could have been there to watch these interactions - faith!)

and had a delicious dinner at TGIFridays!

On Saturday we drove to Boston and she got to see my dorm room and

meet some of my new friends at BU. We went out for a delicious lunch,

too! On Sunday we woke up and went out to breakfast with Peter,

Kaitlin, Alex, Caroline, Samantha and Larkin! Then, we hung out at my

house before going to Sully's house for a visit. (We even got to see

the baby's very cute pink nursery!) We played some band hero, and of

course went out for some Mexican food! Monday we got up early and

went to King Richard's Fair in Carver, MA... we had a great time,

Kendra went on rides and even got her face painted like a puppy. We

went to the Tiger show and saw dancers and a magician. All in all, it

was a very fun weekend!

Dr. Steve's adventure...

Hello folks

As you may or may not know, Dr. Steve is leaving for Haiti in a few days. I am not sure of the actual date, but i know that it will be soon. He will be gone for 3 months. Here is a bit about his trip that he wrote in an email:

I am going [to Haiti]as a "Durant Fellow." Dr. Durant was a Camp Jabberwocky kind
of guy, an MGH doctor who went around the world wearing a Red Sox hat whenever
there was some kind of disaster and organizing rugby games with the local people
during his off hours...Dr. Durant passed away, but the MGH "Refugee Medicine"
department was established in his honor and there are MGH nurses and docs all
over the world at any given time.

My role will be to see patients and to work with the Haitian Health Ministry to
try to help them develop a better system of primary care (currently there is
none) and better primary care training for Haitian nurses and doctors.

Of course, I will try to channel as much of Camp as I can while I'm there.

Dr. Steve will continue to have email access while he is in Haiti, and would love to hear from people now and then. I don't know how quickly he would be able to respond, but, just to know he's being thought of...

Stefanie's exciting news

Baby Shower

As most of you know, our dear Kristen "Sully" St. Amour is expecting a baby girl in approximately 2 months. So a group of July counselors (headed by Maggie Raemer) threw her a surprise shower.

I was not present, so i don't know a lot of the details. I don't even know if Sully was surprised. But as Maggie reports, "everyone had a good time." According to Maggie, they even played a game where they had to "eat poop out of diapers." Don't worry, by "poop" she REALLY means melted chocolate!

I'm not sure i'll be eating ANYTHING out of diapers any time soon, but i'm glad everyone had fun.

We love you, Sully and Jay! Have a happy, healthy baby!

On August 21st, July counselors spent their day on beautiful Martha's Vineyard volunteering at Jabberwocky's biggest fundraiser: the 5K! We raised lots of money for camp and had a great time doing it! Can't wait for next year's race!

She was a truly great friend to all of us at Camp Jabberwocky. It's hard to believe she's no longer with us since we just saw her at the July Camp play a few weeks ago. When we thanked her daughter Lucy for bringing Patricia to the play she said, "Are you kidding? I had no choice!" Patricia was a real inspiration to the entire Jabberwocky community and we'll miss seeing her cheer us on at the parade and having her visit and call us all "My Dear". Thank you for blessing us all Patricia - you are an icon and one-of-a-kind!

We have recently learned that our dear camp nurse, Eleanor Morad, has lost her son last week in an auto accident. Her son, Norman Peloquin, was the father of her adorable grandchildren MacKenzie & Oliver who often visited us at camp. Our thoughts and prayers are with Eleanor and her family at this time. "Fame" Rocked!

Who would have guessed it? After days of ridiculous rehearsals and no final script in place, the Jabberwocky players once again pulled off a fine play. Here's some pictures. Thanks for coming if you did - the place was packed both nights!

Hellcat opened the show with a flawless rendition of "The Jabberwock" poem. Really, she made no mistakes, at 97 years old...

The Fishing Trip

Some of us went on an excellent fishing excursion aboard the SS Skipper. Everyone caught a fish!

We decided not to eat any of the fish we caught and instead threw them back into the sea.

Street Fair

Last week we marched into town en masse for the Tisbury Street Fair, intent on taking the world by storm and gorging everything the fair had to offer. Namely pizza, ice cream, donuts, and other exotic cuisines that can only be found on the Vineyard. Rolling into a packed street fair 70-deep was an adventure in itself, so it's no small feat that the show was stolen by an awe-inspiring performance of George climbing the rock wall. As he fearlessly climbed the Mt. Everest of rock walls, all eyes in Tisbury were on George. The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

Evening Kayak off Chappy

Although our good friends in the August session have partook in this adventure before, us July folk had never ventured to Chappaquiddick for a kayak trip. It was awesome! We paddled under the famous bridge and through pristine lands till our arms nearly fell off.

Nobody fell in the water unless they wanted too. For some reason the water was very warm out there so most of us ended up taking a sunset dip and then sort of regretting it once we had to endure the cool breeze.

Some of us used canoes instead of kayaks.

The trip back in the dusk light was wonderous...

Horseback Riding and Water Fighting

The heat wave continues but it won't slow us down a bit! We hydrated ourselves silly and went horseback riding like the cowboys of yore...

That afternoon we had a water fight. At first it was a baseball game, but then it turned into an all out soakfest. Behold!

That evening we went kayaking and fishing, but you'll have to tune in tomorrow for those pictures. Life is good here at Jabberwocky!

Beating the Heat

While the rest of the East coast melted away in Heat Wave '10, we Jabberwockians hit the beach and cooled off in the refreshing seas. We also ate hamburgers and chocolate.

Hellcat, our fearless founder, was there too, telling everyone she was 97 years old despite claims that she was only 96. We tried to tackle her into the sand but she fought us off every time!

The Parade!

The theme this year was "Jabberwocky in Outer Space" which turned into a Star Wars theme and we won an award for our parade presentation: "Best Overall Everything". It was a great parade, everyone cheered for us and we were all tired afterwards and some of us threw up on our space costumes but that was nothing new except they were space costumes that needed to be cleaned instead of animals or princesses or something. The second half of camp has begun! Jo-Jo left but she's coming back and we got a whole bunch of new campers and counselors to replace the ones we lost.

It's been a great summer so please come say hello if you are on the Vineyard and get ready for the best play ever: Fame! That's the name of the play, "Fame!", but we still need to write it and rehearse too. Somehow we've got to figure out how to use all these space costumes in a play about a high school for performing arts...Anyway, tonight we are going to drumming at the beach! Sand in our fannies! Yes!

Sorry for the recent hiatus we've taken from blog updates! Apologies, apologies all around. Unfortunately our wireless was down for the last couple days - but it looks like we're back in business! So keep checking back in the next few days, as they should be chock full of all the recaps we've missed out on.

SO: on the 25th, we had a dance and pizza party in the studio. There was shimmying, shaking, pop and locking - the whole night was an all out ball! (And hopefully, everyone got a chance to practice their new dance moves for the prom!)

Mini Golf Adventure

Last night, we rolled up to Island Cove - a great mini golf course that also doubles as an obstacle course for wheelchairs and the like. But did any of the Jabberwockians blink at the challenge? No! In fact, quite the opposite - we rolled over [mini] hills and valleys, traversed under waterfalls, and over the rocky terrain that stood between us and the hole. It made for one of the more exciting and fun adventures of the summer thus far.

After only 11 months of waiting, the day has finally arrived. What’s that? No, not the first day of summer – that’s come and passed. But something much, much more exciting: the first day of Camp Jabberwocky in 2010!!!

After meeting in Woods Hole, 32 excited campe1rs braved the voyage across the sea toward their second family and home on Martha’s Vineyard. As always, the counselors offered quite the warm welcome.

Dancing, Drumming, and S'mores-ing
