Studio Night!

It was a cool and cloudy day here on the island so we took advantage of that and another group went horseback riding in the morning. Here's some of Dr. Steve's pics from that trip.



In the afternoon we all took baths and showers because we smelled like horses, even those of us who didn't go riding. Then we practiced our skits and songs and dances for Studio Night, our weekly talent show held down in the Studio after dinner.

Kim and Mike came for dinner with their three daughters and told a story about how the thrid one was born in a tub in their house. Then we cleaned up and hit the studio for the big night. Everyone got on stage for something and it was highly entertaining. Skye told knock-knock jokes and then did some break dance moves. People got in funny costumes and did goofy things. It was a wonderful Studio Night and we're already looking forward to the next one. If you are nearby next weekend c'mon over on Saturday night, the 7th and check it out. Horseback Ridin'

At breakfast Madeline announced that the walk-in refrigerator was broken. We had a quick meeting and decided the only thing to do was eat everything in it, quickly! So that was going to be our morning activity, eating. But then a repair man showed up and fixed it so we went to classes instead. One group went horseback riding and Jeff took some pictures which are conveniently located below.










We had a free afternoon since it was supposed to rain , although it never did. Most folks went downtown and purchased useless trinkets from the local stores. A few people hung out at the coffee shop and heckled passersby. Dinner was early since we were going to see a 7pm movie in Oak Bluffs. We set a goal of getting everyone on the bus by 6pm and by golly we did it! It was amazing, really. And we didn't even drop anyone. Also, no one puked on the ride over, like last year. Here we are sitting in our seats at the theater trying to be quiet.


The movie was "Evan Almighty" and we all agreed it was one of the worst movies we've seen in a quite a while. They should call it "Stupid Almighty". Don't go see it unless you want to take a good nap. But we had fun there anyway. David got up and danced for everyone at the end, and Shirley laughed loudly at inappropriate times. Here we are loading up the bus at night in downtown Oak Bluffs.


Back at camp Manny wanted a shave so Teak started doing that but then Manny said he wanted a girl to do it so Alice, from France, gave it a shot. Manny said she did a good job and didn't cut him too badly.

Drummin'!

Another sunny day greeted us here on the island. In fact it was downright hot and we had the fans going in most of the cabins. After breakfast we all got sweaty participating in a serious drum session down in the studio. Rick had set up just about every drum on the island down there and we banged away with rhythmic delight. If our neighbors were unaware that Camp Jabberwocky was back in session they certainly know now.



After lunch we all piled once again into the bus and headed for our favorite beach. It was pretty much a perfect beach day and we had some good times in the water and horsing around in the sand. Here is a picture Dr. Steve took of Manny in heaven:


Our noble founder Hellcat arrived and we all cheered for her. She's 94! On the way back we got to singing on the bus and treated everyone on Main Street to our lovely rendition of the national anthem.


Hellcat gave us a pep talk before dinner and declared things to be looking good and then after dinner those snappy fellows from The Vineyard Sound came to give us a special concert. Jason got up and sang with them and we all cheered right on through "Zombie Jamboree". Thanks guys!


We hit the sack early because we're all tired, the good kind of tired though. Here's some great pics from day one which Dr. Steve passed along. Our doctor is also a photographer! Or maybe it's the other way around. Already Day One seems like a distant memory, and it's only Day Three!

2and Day, Beach Day

We all awoke to a nice warm sunny day here on the island. Some of us awoke to wet beds as well, but that's fast becoming a first night tradition here at Jabberwocky. Anyway, we ate a hearty breakfast and hit the ground running, so to speak, with a morning of music and classes. Here's new camper Myles taking a mighty swing in sports class.


And here's Dick creating an artistic masterpiece out on the main cabin porch.


After lunch we headed out to the beach with orders that everyone must get in the water. We all did!







Here's second year camper Matt L. taking his first Vineyard swim of the summer with Jonah and Mark.



Matt amazed us all with his underwater prowess last year so we told Jonah and Mark to toss him in. They thought we were kidding but we said, "do it!" So they did.


He survived!


Then David G. serenaded us with some guitar and vocals until it was time to go.


The plan after dinner was to walk downtown and get ice cream but it was Tina's birthday so first we brought out a cake and sang happy birthday. She started crying! But they were happy tears, or so she said, and we all ate cake and then decided to go downtown and have ice cream too, because what's better than cake with ice cream?


So tonight was "sugar night" at camp. Here we see proper counselor form as Jordan feeds Vera while she feeds Hannah. Keep those sweets coming, oh yeah!

Opening Day

What an exciting day this is for all of us here at Camp Jabberwocky '07. The campers arrived on the 11:30am ferry after saying good-bye to their family and friends in Wood's Hole. "Don't worry," we told their parents. "we won't lose them!" Here's the counselors waiting for the campers at the ferry dock in Vineyardhaven. They are dressed in costumes:


We all walked back through town and up to the camp. People in town cheered for us on the way. Most of out campers this year are returning campers, with four new folks for the first half. We've got a lot of returning counselors too.



Bruce Dodson, one of our longtime campers, showed up with a huge black eye! We wanted to put a disclaimer sign on him, "He arrived this way!" Apparently it looks worse than it is, though as you can see it looks pretty bad. Camp doctor Steve checked it out and declared him fit for camp. Some speculated that it was Manny Futardo who socked Bruce on the ferry ride over, but Manny denied this. We'll take good care of you Bruce!


After lunch we unpacked our things and made a general mess of the cabins. Here's the scene in Mimsey:


After a short rest we loaded the entire camp onto the bus and two vans. It took us 35 minutes, which wasn't too bad compared to last year when it took an hour on that first day. We headed out to State Beach in Oak Bluffs for a cookout and then danced to the drumming from Rick and the gang. It was a beautiful sunset and a good time was had by all...






Manny tried to drive one of the vans on the way home but the police wouldn't let him. Back at camp we took showers and tried to go to sleep in anticipation of what we sure hope will be a very fine summer. Please come on by and say hello if you're anywhere near!
